At the heart of the village of Downe, near Orpington, stands a small school with a long history.

Downe Primary School has been part of village life for generations. The original school building on High Elms Road dates from 1906, meaning children have been learning on this site for around 120 years.

From 1906 to Today

The original school was much smaller than the school children know today. As the years passed, the buildings changed to provide more space and new facilities for pupils.

A large modern extension was added in 1973, and in the summer of 2004 another classroom was added, providing further teaching space.

Although the buildings have developed, Downe has remained a small village primary school, serving children from Reception through to Year 6.

A New Chapter

Another important moment came at the beginning of 2023.

The former foundation school officially closed on 31 December 2022 as part of its conversion to academy status. On 1 January 2023, Downe Primary School began its next chapter as an academy and became part of The Pioneer Academy.

The school remains on its historic High Elms Road site in Downe.

The village is famous for Down House, the former home of naturalist Charles Darwin. The history of education in the village has another fascinating connection with the house: in 1907 it became the original home of Downe House School, a girls' school which later moved to Berkshire. This was a completely separate school from Downe Primary, but it makes Downe's educational history unusually rich.

More Than a Building

A school's history is not simply a collection of dates.

It is the story of the children who learned here, the teachers who taught them, playground games, school photographs, performances and sports days, friendships and families whose connection with Downe Primary may stretch across generations.

From the original 1906 school building, through the extensions of 1973 and 2004, to the school's new chapter as an academy from 2023, Downe Primary School continues a long tradition of education at the heart of the village.
