Pupil Leadership

At Downe Primary School, we believe that every child has an important part to play in the life of our school.

Our strong sense of community is something we are very proud of. We want our pupils to feel that Downe is their school – a place where their ideas are valued, their voices are heard and they have genuine opportunities to make a positive difference.

Pupil Voice, Responsibility and Ownership

Pupil leadership gives children opportunities to take on meaningful responsibilities and contribute to our school community. Through a range of leadership roles, pupils develop confidence, independence, teamwork and communication skills, while learning what it means to be responsible for themselves and others.

Each role gives pupils a different way to contribute to school life. Whether they are representing the views of their classmates, helping us to become more environmentally responsible, supporting playtimes, caring for our library or helping with the smooth running of the school day, our pupil leaders know that their contribution matters.

Our School, Our Community

Having leadership opportunities throughout the school reflects the special community feel of Downe Primary School. We encourage our children not simply to attend school, but to take ownership of it and help shape it.

Our School Council and Eco Council ensure that pupils have a voice in decisions and developments, while our monitors and leaders take practical responsibility for different aspects of everyday school life.

These roles help children understand that being part of a community means looking after our environment, supporting one another and being willing to contribute.

Growing Leaders

Pupil leadership is also an important part of preparing children for the future. Taking responsibility helps pupils to develop valuable qualities such as confidence, initiative, cooperation, organisation and resilience.

Most importantly, it gives our children the experience of seeing that their actions can have a positive impact on others.
